Porter's 2nd Cast

Respectively, Brian and Ben (lft. to rt.),

administer the wrapping for Porter's new cast.

(It's blue this time! It was almost pink... yeeek!)

I think old memories have flooded in...

Not long after though, this little guy keeps ticking.

With this second casting, it seems that Porter has pretty much picked up close to where he left off last time. He'll use his right hand, it just takes a great deal of concentration.

Watching him use it, Dane and I relate it to a little baby's coordination.

It's like starting from the beginning like we did with the left hand. Porter is just such a dominant lefty that he finds a way to use it and EVERYTHING except his right hand (his mouth especially) to do what he wants.

"off... off..."

Saddly, the cast didn't last the full 3 weeks. Yes, one night, Porter decided to dunk the casted hand in the toilet. Luckily it was clean, but this is NOT a water-OK cast. We watched to see how the cast did over the next 24 hours. And the following day, Porter decided to go play in the sprinkler while Jenn was watering the garden. (shaking her head)

We took him in and they said it would be best to take it off. We had mixed feelings... he was doing soooooo much more with that right hand (turning door knobs, eating with a pincer grasp, holding a cup correctly, etc.). Although, a relief that we won't be pelted by a solid battering arm anymore was a joyous upside.

Next cast is predicted in the next few weeks -- a temporary one that can be put on and taken off as needed. I think it'll be a lot better of an idea.
